I walked into the theatre having only read the synopsis for this film and having no idea what I was in for. Safe to say, by the time I walked out, I was absolutely floored by this film!

Shot in one month with a comedy skit director who's 26 and a budget under a million dollars, this film truly feels like an anomaly.

But my word, Inde Navarrette, take a bow. Her perfectly nuanced performance doesn't just carry the film — it makes the film. Every smile, flinch, and twitch, combined with her barbaric yells and agonizing screams, makes for a performance that can only be compared to the horror greats like Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs. She deserves an Oscar just for the final 15 minutes alone.

The great debate online was whether Bear really loved Nikki, and whether she was really the "antagonist" of the film. In hindsight, even though I think Bear made the wish on an impulse in a moment of weakness, he had ample opportunities to stop it — the most obvious one being when he calls the "One Wish Willow" helpline and, instead of directly asking to cancel the wish, asks to alter it. In fact, the moment Bear saw the distorted smile and the words "not me" in his lunchbox, the tragedy officially ended and the horror story began. Anyone else would have fled or found a way to reverse the wish. But Bear looked at a literal monster masquerading as his girlfriend and thought: "You know what, as long as she's with me, I'm good." He traded her eternal peace for a terrifying puppet, proving his "grief" was just a cover for pure, unadulterated possession.

I believe the whole friend group were not good people. Ian was a bad influence from the beginning, and in arguably the most pivotal moment of the film, he chose money over his friend. Sarah was a snob and chose to shoot her shot with Bear the moment Nikki started acting out instead of reaching out to her in a moment of need.

I also wanna say, I think Curry Barker delivered a directorial debut that will be talked about for ages to come. Despite the low budget, it deserves plaudits for sure — the effective use of light and shadows, the close-up camera work, the absolutely incredible writing. I think he has a bright future ahead of him in the horror genre.

In the end, Obsession left me feeling obsessed with the fine details, just as much as it did with the characters. I will remember this theatre experience for a long time.
